Park History
Originally known as Forest Park, the first 11.14 acres of what is now Veterans Park were purchased in 1978. In 1997, the park underwent a major transformation thanks to a NatureWorks grant awarded in 1996. The $201,440 project was funded 75% by the grant and 25% by the Anderson Park District. Renovations included the addition of a Memorial Plaza to honor local veterans, a large reservable shelter with seating for over 100 people, a modern restroom facility with upgraded utilities, a new basketball court, and the relocation of a smaller shelter (seating 16) near the fire ring. The project also brought significant improvements to the park’s landscaping, parking lot, and entrance driveway. Veterans Park was rededicated on Veterans Day, November 11, 1997, in honor of all Anderson residents who served in the U.S. armed services.
Lucky Lanier “All Children’s Playground” Gets a Facelift
The playground at Veterans Park was initially constructed in 1988. It was one of the first playgrounds of its type in the Tri-state area that was specifically designed to include children with disabilities. By partnering with the Kiwanis Club of Anderson Hills and using our own labor, the aging equipment and facility at Veterans Park have now been replaced with new, more advanced play structures. The surrounding playscape has also been renovated. The total cost of the construction was $74,695, with the material cost being covered by the Kiwanis Club of Anderson Hills and other outside donations and fundraisers.
Play Pods and Upgrades: A New Chapter in Play
In 2023, Veterans Park received exciting updates with the thoughtful replacement of several play units and the addition of new nature play pods along the gravel trail. These enhancements were made possible through the generous support of the Charles Gill Estate and funding from the 2023 capital levy.
The nature play pods are designed to encourage curiosity, exploration, and hands-on interaction with the natural world. Each pod features themed elements—such as leaves, trees, spiders, and bees—along with informational signage that educates and entertains. These signs offer fun facts and engaging content that spark interest in local ecology, making every stop along the trail a chance to learn something new while playing.
Park Growth
Over the years, the park has grown through additional land acquisitions and now spans 13.1 acres.
In 2024, Veterans Park saw further upgrades aimed at improving accessibility and visitor experience. Enhancements included a parking lot expansion with 52 new spaces, improvements to the existing lot, and the addition of two accessible entry paths from Forest Road on both the east and west sides of the park. Inside the park, a new paved loop trail now connects the parking area to the baseball diamond, basketball court, and small shelter, ensuring easier access to key amenities for all visitors.
