Summer Camps – Cancelled
April 29, 2020 update:
This cancellation information was communicated to registered participants through email and direct mail on April 28, 2020.
The time has come for us to make decisions about our summer programming. We put this off as long as possible, hoping by now to have a manageable, clear path forward through a summer with COVID-19. Unfortunately, we still do not have a clear idea of what this summer will look like. Due to a combination variables and the time it takes to prepare for summer camp, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our 2020 Summer Day Camp, Mini Camp and Travel Camp programs.
So many considerations went into making this decision. Ultimately, we can only run summer camps in which we are confident we can keep our campers and staff safe. Considering the known, unknown, and likely variables for this summer, we do not see a way to accomplish summer camps safely.
It will probably be some time before we are back to business-as-usual. Large gatherings are not likely to return anytime soon, and the practice of social distancing appears likely to continue. Simply put, “social distancing” and “summer camp” are incompatible, as are “personal protective equipment” and “active camp activities” such as capture the flag or swimming on hot summer days.
We will begin the process to issue full refunds. Returning the paid registration fees and deposits to camp families is another factor in why we are making this decision now. If you paid with a credit card at registration, the refund will be credited back to that card. If you paid by cash or check, a refund check will be mailed to you.
Please know we agonized over the decision to cancel what would have been the Anderson Parks’ 37th year of summer camp. We hope you understand that we have made what we believe to be the best decision on behalf of your family and our community. If you have any questions, please contact us.
We look forward to getting on the other side of this challenging time. Until then, please stay safe and be well.
The park district’s summer camps have been a staple in the Anderson community since 1984, and are a great way for kids to spend their summer vacation. A variety of options are offered for children ages 3½–12. Camp counselors are carefully selected to provide fun, safe and meaningful camp experiences.
Each camp has enrollment limits and registration is first-come, first-served.
